Job Description

**Job Title:** Substitute Teacher – Seasonal/Intermittent

**Team:** Child Development

**Position Level:** Individual Contributor, ES4

**Experience Required:** 2+ years

**Location:** Ventura, CA

**Pay Range:** $24.50–$25.50 per hour

As a Substitute Teacher, you will step in to provide coverage for classroom teachers in programs catering to infants, preschoolers, and school-aged children, ensuring high-quality care for children between 2 months and 9 years old. Daily duties include transporting children, managing supplies, physical caregiving, implementing individualized learning activities, supporting relationships with children and parents, and assisting in parent communications like newsletters and activity schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

**Classroom Environment**
– Create an engaging classroom with language, songs, and activities.
– Develop a learning space that suits a mixed-age classroom.
– Maintain a safe environment with consistent supervision.
– Develop a curriculum that accommodates each child’s interests, learning style, and pace.
– Cultivate respectful relationships with children, parents, and co-teachers, valuing individual differences and cultural diversity.
– Design a structured, high-quality program aligned with Patagonia’s values.
– Maintain a balanced schedule for children and staff, allowing for scheduled meal and rest breaks.

**Positive Child Interaction**
– Communicate warmly with children, families, and staff.
– Build a language-rich environment to support language development.
– Treat each child with respect and dignity, encouraging responsible behavior.
– Use developmentally appropriate guidance methods for multi-age groups.

**Parent Collaboration**
– Support seamless transitions for children entering the classroom.
– Foster a communicative, welcoming environment for parents.
– Coordinate with teaching teams to address any parent concerns.

**Team Relations and Administrative Duties**
– Maintain respectful, professional interactions with colleagues.
– Engage in administrative tasks like attendance records, newsletters, and activity calendars.
– Offer guidance and mentorship to other substitute teachers.
– Participate in meetings and training sessions.
– Communicate promptly on any issues to the appropriate contacts.

**Child Transportation**
– Safely transport children using designated vehicles, ensuring timely pickups and drop-offs.
– Complete daily safety inspection reports.

**Physical Requirements:**
This role involves considerable physical activity, such as responding to emergencies, lifting up to 40 pounds, kneeling, and quickly reacting within close distances. Regular first aid responses and effective communication under stress are essential.

**Candidate Profile:**
– High school diploma required.
– Strong commitment to child development and environmental advocacy.
– Excellent customer service skills in various communication channels.
– Adaptable, conscientious, and able to collaborate in a team setting.

**Experience and Skills:**
– Minimum of two years’ experience working with young children.
– At least 15 credits in Early Childhood Education in relevant areas.
– Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
– Proficiency in programs like Word, Excel, and Outlook.
– Completed fingerprinting and criminal background check meeting licensing standards.

**Preferred Qualifications:**
– AA or BA in Early Childhood Education or related field.
– Familiarity with the Outdoor Classroom Project, RIE approach, Pyramid Model, and Learning Stories.
– Fluency in Spanish is a plus.

**Employment Note:**
This is an on-call, seasonal role with limited weekly hours, maxing out at 19 hours per week or 500 hours in a rolling 12-month period.
