As Director, Payroll, you will oversee the planning, implementation, communication, and management of BJ’s payroll programs. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer or their designee, this role ensures compliance with government regulations, supervises the payroll team, and drives process improvements. This full-time position is based in Huntington Beach, California, and includes a relocation package. Periodic travel for conferences, meetings, and related activities is required.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Management:
- Lead efforts to identify and implement payroll best practices and process enhancements.
- Establish operational standards and support automation or process improvements in payroll operations.
- Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing by adhering to organizational standards.
- Provide strategic guidance to payroll leadership on special projects and initiatives.
- Collaborate with Finance, HR, Operations, and other departments to coordinate payroll operations.
- Partner with the HCM technical team to implement and test procedural changes and new systems.
- Ensure the payroll team delivers exceptional customer service, resolving employee inquiries within 24 business hours.
- Address escalated payroll issues and discrepancies efficiently.
- Manage payroll-related projects with a focus on continuous improvement.
Team Development:
- Supervise and develop payroll team members, including hiring, professional growth, assigning tasks, and performance evaluation.
Additional Duties:
- Participate in other assigned projects or responsibilities.
- Travel as necessary for organizational needs.
Qualifications
- 10 years of combined payroll experience, with at least 5 years in a management role.
- Experience managing payroll for a multi-site organization with 10,000+ employees.
- Bachelor’s degree or an additional 4 years of relevant experience.
- Expertise in California payroll administration preferred.
- Strong knowledge of payroll systems; Workday experience is highly preferred.
- Proficient in federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations; ADP Smart Compliance experience is a plus.
- Exceptional analytical, planning, and problem-solving abilities.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects from inception to completion.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills, confidentiality, and employee relations capabilities.
- Team-oriented with flexibility and a collaborative approach to responsibilities.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and payroll systems.
Pay Range
$140,800 to $187,000 annually.
