The Director of Payroll oversees the design, implementation, and management of BJ’s payroll programs while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This full-time role, based at BJ’s Restaurant Support Center in Huntington Beach, California, involves supervising payroll staff, managing processes, and implementing best practices to enhance payroll operations. Reporting directly to the Chief Accounting Officer or their designee, the position includes occasional travel for meetings and events. A relocation package is available for qualified candidates.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Spearhead improvements in payroll practices, processes, and operations to achieve continuous quality enhancement.
- Ensure adherence to operational standards for timely and accurate payroll processing.
- Collaborate with Finance, Accounting, HR, and Operations teams to coordinate payroll activities.
- Lead payroll-related projects, focusing on process optimization and automation.
- Oversee HCM system updates and participate in the development, implementation, and testing of new procedures.
- Provide exceptional customer service, ensuring employee inquiries are resolved within 24 business hours.
- Address and resolve escalated payroll discrepancies and issues.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor the payroll team, overseeing hiring, professional development, work assignments, and performance evaluations.
Other Responsibilities
- Travel as required for meetings or conferences.
- Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- A minimum of 10 years of payroll experience, with 5 years in a managerial role.
- Experience managing payroll for a multi-site organization with at least 10,000 employees.
- Bachelor’s degree or an additional four years of relevant experience in place of a degree.
- Expertise in federal, state, and local payroll taxation; California payroll experience preferred.
- Proficiency with modern HRIS systems, with Workday experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with ADP Smart Compliance is a plus.
- Strong analytical, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage employees at all organizational levels.
- Solid technical skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and payroll systems.
Pay Range
Annual salary: $140,800 – $187,000
